Chemistry is study to explore the essence of substances, and the explorations creates new, useful substances; it serves as the backbone in the field of Science and technology. The Department of Chemistry teaches students, and working people who seek to learn the field of science in the evening, a variety of knowledge and techniques, ranging from the basics to applied chemistry. The Department also explores the latest research in chemistry, and produces persons with motivation and talent, such as researchers, engineers and educators who can contribute to human society.

Research Groups & Research Areas

  • Organic Chemistry

This area mainly deals with organic compounds. Organic compounds mainly consist of carbon forming covalent bonds with elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur. The basic substances of living organisms, as well as other compounds of many different types and forms, belong here.

Kimura Research Group / Satake Research Group

  • Inorganic Chemistry

This is basically the chemistry of all substances other than compounds formed by bonds of C and H. In this field, we study the nature and reactions of everything from single elements counted by atomic number 1 to more than 116, up to compounds made from any combination.

Akitsu Research Group / Haraguchi Research Group

  • Physical Chemistry

Why do chemical reactions occur? What is it that determines the nature of a substance? These are the questions that physical chemistry tries to answer. Deciphering chemical phenomena using physical rules, we search to gain the insight "So, this is what it was all about!."

Aoki Research Group / Naka Research Group / Sasaki Research Group

* For graduation research, in addition the research groups in the Faculty of Science Division II Department of Chemistry, students can select a research group from the Department of Chemistry and Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Science Division I.
